MEMPHIIS – Mid-South Community College men’s and women’s teams started off strong against Division I foe Southwest Tennessee Community College Thursday, but the home teams pulled away for a pair of victories.
Lady Greyhounds
The Lady Greyhounds, looking to get back into the win column, fell short of their goal in a hard-fought 78-57 setback to the Lady Saluqis.
It was a game that started off the way MSCC planned. The Lady Greyhounds had the full-court press working, and it boosted them to an early lead.
However, MSCC players started to run out of steam the last five minutes of the first half, according to head coach Kim Turner.
“The girls came out strong in the first half until about the last five minutes,” Turner said. “Then we got down by 10. We pressed the entire first half, and I honestly think we ran out of gas.”
The Lady Greyhounds went into the second half with a double-digit deficit, and the game eventually slipped away from MSCC in spite of their tough full-court press defense.
Despite the score, Turner said the Lady Greyhounds played with urgency and energy.
“We played a very intense game,” Turner said. “The second half we just couldn’t get that same momentum like we did in the first, and we began to turn the ball over more. But we never stopped fighting to stay in the game.”
Laquaris Harris paced the scoring effort for the Lady Greyhounds with 15 points. Nichole Bennett finished with 10 points, while Arica Wallace had seven for MSCC.
The loss drops the Lady Greyhounds to 2-5 on the year, but Coach Turner said there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
“We are getting the experience we need to compete in the future,” Turner said.
MSCC’s women will be back in action Dec. 7 as they travel to Missouri for the St. Louis Community College Classic tournament.
Greyhounds
The Greyhounds, looking to extend their winning streak to five games, came up short in an 84-70 loss to STCC.
It was a game that the Greyhounds started strong. MSCC led almost the entire first half until the last minute when Southwest put together a run to take a 36-35 lead into the locker room.
The Greyhounds were unable to mount a comeback in the final 20 minutes. Greyhounds’ head coach Chris Parker said it was a game in which his team’s youth showed.
“We just didn’t hit open shots, and we made poor decisions down the stretch,” he said. “But we are a work in progress and will learn from this game.”
Trevail Lee led the scoring effort for the Greyhounds with a team-high 22 points, including two field goals beyond the three-point arc. Rodney Ollison finished with 13 points, while Larry Ziegler notched nine for MSCC.
The loss snaps the Greyhounds’ four-game winning streak and drops them to 4-5 on the season. But Parker said the loss will serve as a lesson for his young team.
“It may very well serve as our most valuable teaching opportunity of the season,” Parker said.
The Greyhounds will hit the road Dec. 7 to take on St. Louis Community College in their next contest.
