Mid-South Community College’s Greyhounds stormed to a 23-7 lead and used solid free-throw shooting and timely three-point buckets in the second half to defeat Middle Georgia Tech 80-71 at Marion Arena on Saturday.
“We came out the way we wanted to come out,” said Greyhounds’ head coach Chris Parker. “But (Middle Georgia Tech) is a good team, and we knew they would make a run. We were fortunate to hold them off at the end.”
MSCC led 39-27 at the intermission, but the Titans battled back to take their first lead of the game, 50-48, with 11:30 left to play in the second half. From there, the Greyhounds rebounded and regained the momentum down the stretch.
Mid-South connected on eight three-pointers in the game. Arguably, though, the biggest difference was the free throw shooting.
The Greyhounds shot 76 percent (22 for 29) from the charity stripe while the Titans connected on just 54 percent (15 for 28) of their tries from the line.
Trevail Lee led MSCC with a team-high 19 points Saturday, and Shaquille Culbreath contributed 16.
The victory puts the Greyhounds on a two-game win streak and improves their record to 2-4 on the season.
“Right now I see progress,” Parker said. “We are continuing to progress every game and get a little bit better at certain things. We just need to stay on that pattern and keep getting better every time we play.”
The Greyhounds will be back in action today (Monday, Nov. 19) as they hit the road to take on Champion Baptist College in Hot Springs.
MSCC will play the remainder of its 2012 schedule on the road before returning home on Friday, Jan. 4, 2013, to take on Northwest Mississippi Community College at Lehr Arena in West Memphis.
