Greyhounds Defeat Champion Baptist College for Third Straight Win

HOT SPRINGS – Freshman Rodney Ollison scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to key Mid-South Community College’s 90-80 win over Champion Baptist College on Monday, Nov. 19.
The victory gave the Greyhounds their third straight decision and moved them within one game of the .500 mark.

“Rodney has been giving some good minutes as a high-energy player,” said MSCC Coach Chris Parker. “He is very active and plays hard, and his energy was a big part of his ability to take advantage of an occasional mismatch. He is also active on the offensive boards, and he did a good job of scoring out of our offense.”

Like MSCC’s previous win over Middle Georgia Tech, the victory over Champion Baptist required a second-half surge. The Greyhounds built an early lead that they saw shrink late in the game. MSCC took a 45-40 advantage into the locker room at halftime, but the Tigers, who play as an Association of Christian College Athletics independent, clawed their way into the lead after the intermission.

The Greyhounds responded to the challenge with a run of their own, an effort that pleased their head coach.

“We lost the lead in the second half but never quit,” Parker pointed out. “For the second game in a row we were able to withstand a run and come back to win. That speaks volumes about the character and heart of our team.”

T.J. Handley contributed 15 points in the win, while Trevail Lee and Shaquille Culbreath put up 13 points each. Larry Ziegler and Eugene Palmer rounded out the Greyhound scoring effort with eight points apiece.

MSCC returns to action on Tuesday (Nov. 27) with a road game against the Central Baptist College’s junior varsity, a team the Greyhounds defeated 86-81 at Marion Arena on Nov. 10.

Parker said his team will be working on many of the same things he has stressed all season before they head to Conway in search of the win.

“We are constantly stressing defense and rebounding,” the coach said. “The other area we need to improve is cutting down on turnovers.”

NSCC’s Lady Greyhounds will also be in action Tuesday night, but they will be traveling in a different a direction to take on Three Rivers College in Poplar Bluff, Mo. The Lady Greyhounds have won two straight and are looking to even their season record against the 7-1 Lady Raiders who compete in Division I of the National Junior College Athletic Association.
