Lady Greyhounds top Lady Titans for Second Straight Victory

The Mid-South Community College Lady Greyhounds’ home opener Saturday finished just the way they wanted it to – with a win.

MSCC held off a late run by Middle Georgia Technical College to secure a 72-67 victory over the Lady Titans. The win gives the Lady Greyhounds a two-game winning streak and a 2-3 record on the young season.

The Lady Greyhounds jumped out on a 14-2 run to start the game and took a 34-26 lead over the visitors heading into halftime. However, the Lady Titans inched their way back and took their first lead of the game, 57-56, with 6:28 left to play in the second half.

MSCC avoided the scare with an 8-2 run later in the game to hold off the Lady Titans. Lady Greyhounds’ head coach Kim Turner said it was a back-and-forth kind of game.

“We had a lot of ups and downs,” Turner said. “But overall we came out with a win, and I am happy about that.”

It was the Lady Greyhound defense that set the tone early in the game. Utilizing a stellar full-court press, MSCC scored 14 of the game’s first 16 points to Terrika Madden – 16 points Laquaris Harris – 12 points take a double-digit lead.

The Lady Greyhounds stifled the Lady Titans with the pressure for quick steals that led to easy buckets early on in the game. Coach Turner was happy with the defensive effort she saw on Saturday afternoon.

“Our defense was very aggressive,” Turner said. “The full-court press kept us in the game. We had to lay off of it a little bit when we got tired, but then we went back with it at the end to help regain the lead. The full-court press is really what did it for us.”

Terrika Madden led the Lady Greyhounds with 16 points in the game – all of which came in the second half. Laquaris Harris added 12 points for MSCC and also made two three-pointers.

Harris knocked down a big three for the Lady Greyhounds with 2:45 left in the contest to put her team up by six points and ultimately put the game out of reach for Middle Georgia Tech.

Turner said winning the home opener is always a good feeling and one that was well deserved for the Lady Greyhounds.

“It feels great,” Turner said. “I am happy for the team because they have really been working hard, and they earned this win.”

The Lady Greyhounds will return to action on Nov. 27 when they hit the road to face Three Rivers Community College in Poplar Bluff, Mo. MSCC will play the remainder of its 2012 schedule on the road before coming home on Jan. 1, 2013, for a game against Eastern Oklahoma State College at Lehr Arena in West Memphis.
