Mid-South Community College students teamed up to win two gold, nine silver, and seven bronze medals at the Arkansas SkillsUSA State Leadership and Skills Championship at Hot Springs on April 18-20.
“We are excited and proud of our students for performing so admirably at the state competition,” said Donnylle P. Hampton, Program Coordinator of the MSCC Technical Center. “It’s a great confidence builder for them to do well against the best students from other schools in the state.”
MSCC has won 119 medals since joining the SkillsUSA competition in 2007. For the second consecutive year, MSCC captured gold and silver medals in the post-secondary Medical Math competition. Tammie Martin, West Memphis, placed first, and Courtney Collins, West Memphis, came in second.
In its first year to compete in the post-secondary Aviation Maintenance contest, MSCC set the bar high by earning gold and silver medals. Chris Wells, Eads, Tenn., won the competition, and Cameron Forester, Marion, finished second. The College picked up a pair of silver medals in the Diesel Equipment Technology as William Hardy, Earle, came in second in the secondary division and Joshua Sims, West Memphis, finished as the runner-up in the post-secondary competition. Carderius Saine, West Memphis, earned a bronze medal in the secondary division.
MSCC’s secondary Health Knowledge Bowl team of Keona Barbee, Proctor; Gwen Boatwright, West Memphis; Sandress Rucks, West Memphis, and Dana Thorn, Hughes, captured a silver medal.
Spencer Christian, Marion, won a silver medal in the secondary Computer Maintenance Technology competition, and Michael Rhodes, Marion, won bronze in the secondary Technical Computer Applications contest.
In the secondary Web Design category, Reagan Donald, West Memphis, and Jacob Patterson, Marion, teamed up to win a bronze medal. MSCC’s team of James Pickens, Marion, and Ashley Humphrey, West Memphis, brought home a bronze in the Secondary Robotics and Automation contest.
Luich Lucio, Crawfordsville, competing in the Post-Secondary Extemporaneous Speaking competition, finished third to earn a bronze medal. MSCC students also competed in Welding, Job Skill Demonstration, First Aid/CPR, Medical Terminology, Promotional Bulletin Board, Welding, and Welding Fabrication.
First-place finishers/gold medal winners will have the opportunity to attend the 48th annual National Leadership and Skills Conference in Kansas City June 23-27. The SkillsUSA Championships is the showcase for the best career and technical students in the nation.
The multi-million dollar event occupies a space equivalent to 16 football fields, and in 2011, more than 5,700 contestants competed in 94 separate events. Nearly 1,500 judges and contest organizers from labor and management make the national competition possible.
