International Honor Society at MSCC Inducts New Members

Mid-South Community College’s Beta Epsilon Psi Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society inducted 30 new members during its spring semester ceremony on Monday, April 23.
 
Chapter Vice President Lori Wilson of West Memphis welcomed and addressed the new members, and Secretary Rhonda Butler of Hughes introduced continuing members and advisors.
 
Treasurer Leigh McDaniel of West Memphis explained the organization’s symbols, and MSCC chapter President Annette McCollum of West Memphis administered the oath of membership.
 
Wilson presided over the induction of new members, and Butler provided the closing remarks. Jonelle Spicer of West Memphis, who serves as the local chapter’s Public Relations Officer, also participated in the program.

MSCC inductees for spring 2012 (listed by home towns) are as follows:

English instructor Michelle McMillen serves as Phi Theta Kappa advisor. Chartered in the spring of 1997, MSCC’s chapter includes service-oriented students with a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher in at least 12 hours of course work leading to an associate degree.
 
MSCC’s Phi Theta Kappa members participate in a variety of projects to benefit the campus and the community. The Beta Epsilon Psi chapter is actively involved in a book recycling effort and collecting clothing and food items for the Eighth Street Mission in West Memphis. In addition, in support of the Operation Green initiative encouraging environmental awareness, the local chapter collects plastic shopping bags in partnership with Wal-Mart to raise funds for local elementary schools.
 
Phi Theta Kappa has recognized two-year college scholars since 1918 and is the only internationally-acclaimed honor society serving institutions with associate degree programs. The organization is the largest honor society in American higher education with more than 1.3 million members and 1,100 chapters located in the United States, U.S. territories, Canada, Germany, and Japan. The three ideals that band PTK members together are wisdom, aspiration, and purity.
