MSCC Promotes Weaver to Associate VP for Finance

Mid-South Community College has promoted Karyn Weaver to Associate Vice President for Finance. She previously worked in the Finance Office as controller for the college.

“Karyn has worked hard and has been a major asset to the college,” said Susan Marshall, CPA, Vice President for Finance and Administration. “We couldn’t do what we do without her.”

“She has almost 20 years of higher education accounting experience, and she probably has more knowledge about state rules and procedures and how to handle them than a lot of finance vice presidents. This promotion gives her the opportunity to grow professionally and will help the college take full advantage of her talents and abilities.”

Weaver, who supervised two employees as controller, will now lead and guide a staff of eight. Part of her new focus will be on grants and contracts, a constantly expanding and evolving area at the college.

“We solicit and administer a lot more grants than most other colleges, and many of them require a great deal of attention and oversight,” Marshall explained. “Karyn works fast, is exceptionally accurate, and has an eye for details, so she is the perfect person to take on this new responsibility.”

Weaver said she relishes the opportunity to take on additional responsibilities. “I’m excited because this new position gives me a chance to become even more intricately involved in the complex finances of the college,” Weaver said. “Because we handle so many grants and training contracts, my new duties will be especially challenging. I appreciate Susan’s confidence in me and look forward to helping the finance office become even more efficient.”

Weaver came to MSCC in the fall of 2006 after serving almost 10 years as controller/chief fiscal officer at Phillips Community College of the University of Arkansas in West Helena.

While at PCCUA, she controlled and maintained a $16 million budget and managed all functions of the business office. Weaver implemented a comprehensive online receipt system in 2001 and facilitated a major finance and student information software conversion in 2006.

Weaver earned a bachelor’s degree in Finance from Arkansas State University and began her career as an accounts payable/logistics clerk for Sysco Food Service of Arkansas in Little Rock. She later relocated to Helena where she served as loan assistant/customer service assistant at First National Bank of Phillips County.

In 1995, Weaver became accounting manager for the Northwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center in Clarksdale, and two years later, she accepted the position at PCCUA. When the Finance Office opportunity became available at MSCC, Weaver couldn’t resist.

“I came to Mid-South Community College because I wanted a challenge, and I haven’t been disappointed,” she said. “We’re always dealing with something new and different, and that really appeals to me. I love that MSCC is constantly growing and that we’re always looking for new opportunities to expand.”

When she’s not crunching numbers at MSCC, Weaver enjoys spending time with her husband and three daughters. Her two older children are involved in softball, basketball, volleyball, so “they keep me going all the time."
