Through the generosity of the family in memory of Lillian and Charles J. Upton Sr. and Charles J. Upton Jr., the Upton Family Memorial Scholarship has been established at Mid-South Community College.
Upton family members have lived in West Memphis/Crittenden County for more than 70 years and have been actively involved in the business, social, and education communities. Mrs. Pam Upton Capps and Mr. and Mrs. Richard Upton established the scholarship as a way to honor their parents’ and grandparents’ memories while providing much-needed financial support for dedicated and deserving students.
“We thought a scholarship would be a good way to remember their impact on the community,” explained Capps, who coordinates the Medical Assisting program at MSCC. “We have a lot of people in our region who need financial help to continue their education, and we wanted to give back to our community by establishing this scholarship.”
The scholarship fund supports a $500 award to an MSCC student each fall and spring semester, and the award may be applied to tuition, fees, and/or textbooks.
To be eligible for the scholarship, students must have a minimum cumulative high school or college grade-point average of 2.5, must enroll in at least nine credit hours per semester and must demonstrate financial need by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
“A lot of scholarships are for students with 3.0 GPAs and above, and we wanted this one to be more accessible for someone who really needed the money but might not have the highest grades,” Capps said.
“Ideally, the scholarship recipient would earn a healthcare certificate or degree at MSCC and help meet the patient needs of Crittenden County.”
The Mid-South Community College Foundation is administering the Upton Family Memorial Scholarship, one of more than 60 awards available to help students pursue life-changing education and training opportunities.
