MSCC Students Earn 18 Medals at SkillsUSA State Championship

Mid-South Community College students teamed up to win two gold, nine silver, and seven bronze medals at the Arkansas SkillsUSA State Leadership and Skills Championship at Hot Springs on April 18-20.
 

“We are excited and proud of our students for performing so admirably at the state competition,” said Donnylle P. Hampton, Program Coordinator of the MSCC Technical Center. “It’s a great confidence builder for them to do well against the best students from other schools in the state.”

International Honor Society at MSCC Inducts New Members

Mid-South Community College’s Beta Epsilon Psi Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society inducted 30 new members during its spring semester ceremony on Monday, April 23.
 

Chapter Vice President Lori Wilson of West Memphis welcomed and addressed the new members, and Secretary Rhonda Butler of Hughes introduced continuing members and advisors.

MSCC Greyhounds to Play Next Two Years in NJCAA Division II

Mid-South Community College has successfully petitioned the National Junior College Athletic Association to move from Division III to Division II for the 2012-13 and 2013-2014 basketball seasons.
 

The change will allow MSCC to offer tuition, fee, and book scholarships to studentathletes, will give the Greyhounds a better opportunity to qualify for post-season play, and will make playoff participation more economically feasible.

Marion Residents Sweep MSCC Speech Contest Titles

Mid-South Community College students Rhonda Carter and Tyler Woolbright, both from Marion, made the best oral presentations to win first-place awards at the 2012 Speech Contest held on Wednesday (April 18).
 

Carter captured top honors and a $100 gift card in the Prepared Speech competition, and Woolbright prevailed in the Impromptu Speaking division and earned a $50 gift card.

MSCC Student to Participate in Arkansas 2032 Conference

Lori King-Wilson of West Memphis will represent Mid-South Community College at the Arkansas 2032 Conference at the University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service April 27-28.
 

The conference, coordinated by graduate student Nate Looney, will bring together student representatives from Arkansas public and private higher education institutions to critically assess and offer solutions for some of the most pressing issues in the state over the next 20 years.

MSCC Receives Grant to Enhance Entrepreneurship, Job Growth

Mid-South Community College has been awarded a $19,950 grant to train local entrepreneurs so they can start or expand their own businesses and create additional jobs in the region.

The Delta Regional Authority and the Douglas C. Greene Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE) at Southeast Missouri State University announced nearly $185,000 in grants funded by the U.S. Small Business Administration’s PRIME program and the DRA.
 

The objective of the effort is to increase the capacity for communities to train, support, and mentor aspiring entrepreneurs and to accelerate the number of new ventures created each year throughout the region. The cornerstone of the project is the nationally recognized Operation JumpStart SM entrepreneurship development program offered by the CIE.

MSCC Students Earn Record Number of Foundation Scholarships

Mid-South Community College students received a record number of privately-funded scholarships during the spring 2012 semester, thanks to an ever-increasing list of benefactors of the MSCC Foundation.

“We continue to add new scholarships every year, and that is really exciting,” said Patti Coleman, MSCC Director of Advancement. “I am continually amazed at the generosity of the people of Crittenden County, especially during such challenging economic times. I appreciate their willingness to invest in our efforts to secure a brighter future for our students, and I know the scholarship recipients are very thankful for the assistance.
