Two ASU Mid-South Employees to Participate in Leadership Institute

Arkansas State University Mid-South employees Michelle McMillen and Pete Selden have been selected to participate in the Arkansas Community Colleges’ Leadership Institute.

McMillen, ASU Mid-South Director of Institutional Effectiveness, and Selden, Associate Vice President for Workforce Programs, will join colleagues from around the state in the training effort. The vision for the Institute is to identify, develop, prepare and advance leaders from within Arkansas’s two-year colleges.

“Michelle McMillen is an emerging leader who displays enormous drive and talent in everything she does,” said Dr. Debra West, ASU Mid-South Chancellor. “As Director of Institutional Effectiveness, she recently led our successful re-accreditation efforts, all the while maintaining one foot firmly in the classroom.

“As a classroom instructor, she demonstrates an understanding of and a passion for the students we serve. That speaks volumes about the type of person she is – dedicated to her profession, committed to the betterment of this institution, and focused on helping students achieve.”

Dr. West said Selden handles a wide variety of responsibilities efficiently and eagerly.

“Pete Selden wears so many hats, it’s hard to know where he keeps them all. As Vice Chancellor for Workforce Education, he is responsible for overseeing our Department of Labor grants and federal Perkins activities, as well as coordinating all the various Career and Technical Education program areas across campus.

“In addition to all of his other responsibilities, he often finds time to provide comprehensive tours of our facilities and showcase our equipment when visitors come to our campus. All of these things he does quietly, competently, and with a tremendously positive attitude.”

McMillen, a self-professed lifelong learner, said she is looking forward to participating.

“I am extremely honored to have been chosen, and I’m really excited about going,” she said. “I come from a retail, real estate, and sales background, so while I have management experience, it isn’t in higher education until now. I think the Leadership Institute will help me build on my skills, help me with my responsibilities at the college, and prepare me for the future.”

While ASU Mid-South’s Sandra C. Goldsby Library Media Center has two copies of the training guide available for employee use, McMillen has purchased her own.

“I’m the kind of person who likes to take notes and write in my books, probably because I’m an English teacher,” she explained. “I’m into lifetime learning and am always excited about learning something new.”

Selden said the Institute provides a great opportunity for personal and professional growth.

“I believe that being engaged in this program will allow me to become a better leader and will give me a greater understanding of higher education, my leadership style, and what I can do to make more of a positive impact at ASU Mid-South,” he said.

“In participating, I hope to gain a greater knowledge and awareness of how the Arkansas Department of Higher Education works, what roadblocks we as community colleges face, and what plans we can make to overcome these roadblocks. I am honored to have been chosen to represent ASU Mid-South this year.”

Now in its eighth year, the ACC Leadership Institute addresses active listening; conflict management and consensus building; managerial counseling, coaching and confrontation; constructive interaction; goals (setting and attaining); effective communication, and observation and feedback.

Through an experienced-based model, participants develop general leadership skills and executive leadership skills related to academics, finance and student affairs. Competencies endorsed by the American Association of Community Colleges are addressed.

Dr. Linda Beene, former long-time director of ADHE, will conduct the Institute, and more than 25 guest speakers are expected to make presentations. The first official gathering is scheduled for November, and the group will also convene in February and April.

The Institute was established in 2008 after a statewide study highlighted the potential shortage of administrative leadership at community colleges in Arkansas.
