MSCC Students Earn 15 Medals at SkillsUSA State Championship

Mid-South Community College students won two gold, nine silver, and four bronze medals at the Arkansas SkillsUSA State Leadership and Skills Championship at Hot Springs on April 14-15.

MSCC has earned 161 medals since joining the SkillsUSA competition in 2007.

Jeremie Paige of MSCC and the Academies of West Memphis and Veronika Pounds of MSCC and Earle High School won state championships and qualified to participate in the 51st annual National Leadership and Skills Conference in Louisville City this summer.

Paige earned a gold medal in Aviation Maintenance Technology (secondary), and Pounds struck gold in Nurse Assisting (secondary).

“Jeremie is a first-year student (10th grade) and is very meticulous in all of his projects, ensuring every step is done correctly,” said David Bond, Lead Faculty for the MSCC’s Aviation Maintenance Technology program. “I’ve told him, with this mindset, he would be a great asset for any company. All aircraft mechanics should have this attribute.”

“Veronika has been a role model student from Day 1,” said Martha Herron, MSCC Director of Certified Nursing/Allied Health Instructor who placed third in the Outstanding Advisor category. “She’s worked really hard and is very focused. I look forward to her future accomplishments in the nursing profession. That’s her goal (to become a nurse), and she is driven.”

Aviation Maintenance Technology contestants perform 12 tasks that represent the types of maintenance they will handle in the aircraft industry. The contest scope is consistent with the airframe and power plant mechanics certification guide published by the Federal Aviation Administration.

Nurse Assisting contestants are judged on assessment of proficiency in areas of activities of daily living, personal care, assessment and communication. The competition includes a written exam with a compilation of questions from various state/national Certified Nursing Assistant licensure exams.

MSCC’s silver medalists included Ethan Burnett, Aviation Technology secondary, Academies of West Memphis; Markus Wells of Eads, Tenn., Aviation Technology post-secondary; Brittney Willis, Basic Health Care Skills secondary, Academies of West Memphis; Khadar Giordano of Mason, Tenn., CNC Milling post-secondary; Craig Beshires of Olive Branch, Miss., CNC Turning post-secondary; Jesse Myers, Diesel Equipment Technology secondary, Marion High School; Joshua Johnson of Marion, Information Technology Services post-secondary; Jessica Nicole Bridges of Crawfordsville, Technical Computer Applications post-secondary, and Jonathan Kent, Welding secondary, Marion High School.
