Military Education Publication Selects MSCC as Top School

Military Advanced Education (MAE) has awarded Mid-South Community College the designation of a Top School in its 2015 Guide to Colleges & Universities which measures best practices in military and veteran education. MSCC is a four-time winner of the recognition.

“We consider it an extraordinary honor to play a part in the educational and career success of our military veterans and their families,” said MSCC President Dr. Glen Fenter. “The men and women who serve our country give their best for us every day, so it’s a privilege of the highest order for us to extend the same courtesy to them.”

“MSCC recognizes the unique learning needs of military personnel, and we are dedicated to assisting them in their efforts to achieve academic success,” added Dr. Barbara Baxter, MSCC Executive Vice President. “We are proud of our long-standing commitment to provide quality educational programs and student support services to the men and women who defend our country and the freedoms we enjoy.”

John Easley, MSCC Dean of Enrollment Services, compiled and submitted information for MAE’s evaluation. He said the College provides a variety of services for current and former military members.

“We offer individual attention and an array of important student support services, including free academic coaching,” Easley said. “Our institution provides cutting-edge, employment-relevant training programs like aviation maintenance, machining, manufacturing, process control, renewable energy technology, and welding. We also offer several allied health programs to give servicemen and women viable career options.”

In addition, Easley said MSCC’s general education curriculum provides the groundwork for additional studies through four-year institutions.

“Our general education program provides great opportunities, and our students have transferred credits to approximately 170 of the finest colleges and universities across the United States.”

MAE published survey results this month, and the information is available online at www.mae-kmi.com. The Guide presents results of a questionnaire of the military-supportive policies enacted at more than 600 institutions including private, public, for-profit, not-for-profit, four-year, and two-year colleges.

From community colleges to state universities, online universities and nationally-known centers of higher learning, MAE’s 2015 Guide to Colleges & Universities arms students with information about institutions that go out of their way to give back to our men and women in uniform.

“We believe the Guide serves as an invaluable tool for both education services officers and transition officers when advising servicemembers about their educational opportunities,” said Kelly Fodel, MAE’s editor. “We used strict criteria to individually evaluate the submissions of respondents, and we had a record number of schools participating this year.”

Now in its eighth year of publishing the Guide, MAE was the first publication to launch a reference tool of this type. This year, the publication evaluated institutions on their military culture, financial aid, flexibility, on-campus support and online support services.

Each school’s performance rating by category is represented by an easy-to-recognize dashboard which enables prospective students to quickly target schools that follow best practices in military education, and then put these in context with other academic or career considerations.

In addition to the Guide, MAE has built an online, searchable database to help students find the right institution.

“We designed this database with the military student in mind,” Fodel pointed out. “We want to help them make informed choices, so we are giving them access to all the survey questions and answers provided by the schools, as well as explanations about critical issues like activation and deployment policies, withdrawal policies, scholarship and financial aid information and important support information.”

In addition to recognition from Advanced Military Education, Mid-South has been named to G.I. Jobs’ Military Friendly School list four times.
