Eleanor, Solon Anthony Remember Fathers with MSCC Scholarship

Eleanor and Solon Anthony have established a Mid-South Community College Foundation scholarship to honor the memories of their fathers Mr. Porter Bennett and Mr. Luke S. Anthony.

“We’re educators, and we felt that if we could do anything to help any child in the school business, we needed to do it,” Mr. Anthony said. “We thought this would be a good way to honor the memory of our fathers as well, and we welcomed the opportunity to come on board.”

The Anthony Bennett Memorial Scholarship Fund supports the awarding of one $250 scholarship to a Mid-South Community College student each fall and spring semester. This award is designed to help students purchase textbooks for MSCC courses.

Scholarship criteria include a minimum cumulative high school or college grade-point average of 2.75, enrollment in a minimum of six hours, and demonstration of financial need. Applicants must also be at least 25 years old to qualify.

The Anthonys devoted 68 cumulative years to the educational process as teachers, counselors, and administrators, mainly in the Hughes, Ark., school system. So their support of a scholarship comes as no surprise. In addition, Solon is an original member of the MSCC Board of Trustees.

“We’re so grateful to have the college here in this area,” he said. “It serves the whole community, young and old. Mid-South Community College is the greatest thing that has ever happened to our area. Opportunities are great for young people today. When I was growing up, we had to drive at least 100 miles to any institution as far as college is concerned. Now we have one right here.”

“Higher education is something you’re going to need. It’s not something that you might need. In this high-tech world of today, if we’re not prepared for the future, we just don’t go very far. The river is deep, and unless people prepare themselves to swim well, they just aren’t going to get across. Thanks to Mid-South Community College, the opportunity is here.”

Eleanor, originally from Camden, met Solon, a lifelong resident of Crittenden County, in college. They have been married for 64 years and are associated with Anthony Funeral Home. The Crittenden County community of Anthonyville is named for Solon’s grandfather, and he has served as an alderman there.
