MSCC, which also “adopted” a class last year, raised $957 for the 2012 effort, and the money went toward clothing items that included sweatshirts, jeans, and T-shirts.
“Phi Theta Kappa is an academic honor society with an ‘honors in action’ focus,” said Beta Epsilon Psi Chapter Advisor Michelle McMillen who is a Communications instructor at the College. “Many of us take the necessities of life for granted, but we’re helping kids who don’t always have what they need, let alone what they want.”
“We’re very pleased with the response from our students and staff, and we’re excited and honored to have the opportunity to reach out and help. It is so nice to work at a place where there is such a giving spirit and where people work together. I especially want to thank the Male Mentoring Club for donating money that their organization raised to help out with this worthy endeavor.”
Phi Theta Kappa challenged the campus by pledging to match any donation amount up to $250. Students and employees responded in a major way.
“With everyone’s help, we raised $150 more than last year,” McMillen said. “The kids in our sponsored class at Weaver will have a great Christmas because of everyone who participated.”
MSCC has participated in a variety of holiday benevolence efforts in recent years, including Toys for Tots, Koats for Kids, and Clothe-a-Kid.
Mid-South’s Phi Theta Kappa members are involved in numerous projects to benefit the campus and the community. Their efforts have ranged from plastic bag and book recycling to collecting food for those in need.
