Mid-South Community College remains in the fast lane of the information superhighway for the fall 2012 by offering nearly 40 computer-related courses for novices through networking wizards.
Everything from Intro to Computers for those who want to gain a basic understanding of how the technology works to UNIX System Administration I for second-year students is being offered for the term which begins Monday, Aug. 20.
Information systems-related options at MSCC include Associate of Applied Science Degrees in Business Technology/Applications Specialist and Information Systems Technology/ Internet Web Professional and Computer Networking. The College also offers Certificates of Proficiency in Cisco® Certified Network Associate (CCNA), Microcomputer Upgrade and Repair, and Web Design.
Students also have the opportunity to work toward CCNA, CompTia A+, and/or Master Certified Internet Web Professional certifications.
A new addition to the Information Systems area this fall is a digital media class, Film and Video Production, which will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11:10 a.m.-12:35 p.m.
Instructor Anwar Jamison says the course will focus on hands-on learning opportunities for students of any academic level.
“Film and Video Production is completely hands on, almost from the very beginning of class,” he explained. “The course has no prerequisites, so even new students will have the opportunity to enroll and jump right into making videos.”
The final project for students will be to produce a video with the theme of “How MSCC Changed My Life.”
Students will be asked to find a good story, interview an interesting student, write a script, and make a mini documentary that fits the specified format. The best videos may be selected to air on MSCC’s cable TV channel and/or appear on the college’s website. “We should have a bunch of good stories to show,” Jamison said.
With the rapid rise of digital media, many people have already been exposed to some of its practical applications.
“Technology and video is so wide spread that almost everyone has some knowledge and interest in it,” Jamison said. “Almost everybody is an amateur photographer or videographer now. “And since everything has gone digital, it’s a great time for this kind of class.”
Jamison has been working with educators from U of M and Arkansas State University while designing the MSCC class.
“I have looked at classes at both of those institutions since most of our students who transfer from here go to one of them. U of M is going digital at the same time we are, so we’re hoping to help out each other.”
If students show enough interest in the class, additional digital media options will be added as needed.
MSCC is also offering Introduction to Film, which will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8-9:25 a.m., this fall. While the class is a part of the Fine Arts offerings at the College, it will also complement the Film and Video Production course.
