Marquavious Smith, a 6-6 forward from Germantown (Tenn.) High School, has signed to continue his basketball career at Mid-South Community College.
Smith averaged 4.2 points, 4.2 rebounds, and a team-leading 1.9 blocks per game for head coach Marvis Davis. The two-year letterman also served as team captain as a senior and posted highs of 11 points, 11 rebounds, and six blocked shots.
“Marquavious is probably as good an athlete as we’ve had at Mid-South Community College,” said Greyhounds’ head coach Chris Parker. “He loves to catch the alley-oop and has a really nice jump shot all the way out to the three-point line.”
“He definitely has a lot of perimeter skill, and he handles the ball like a guard. He can play the wing if that’s what we want him to do. He has big hands, and he really plays long. He just needs to continue to hone his skills and put on some weight.”
A starter as a senior, Smith wanted to continue his playing career after high school and filled out an online interest form he found on the Greyhounds’ website.
“We had seen Germantown, but he was sick that night and didn’t play,” Parker pointed out. “He wasn’t on our radar, and we did not actively recruit him until we received the form. But I called him the day we received it.”
“He’s a nice young man, and I think in our region he’s as a big a ‘sleeper’ as there is this year. We think we’ve found a jewel, and we’re excited about his potential.”
Other 2012-13 Greyhound signees include Xavier Clardy of Conway High School, Damar Reed of Star City High School, T.J. Handley and Rodney Ollison of Watson Chapel High School, Tyrone Willis of Morrilton High School, and Larry Ziegler of Sylvan Hills High School.
