Family Establishes MSCC Athletic Scholarship in Memory of Phillip Brick Sr.

The Brick family has established the Phillip M. Brick, Sr. Memorial Athletic Scholarship at Mid-South Community College in recognition of Phillip’s countless and selfless contributions to his family and community. Brick, 56, succumbed to cancer on Feb. 25.

“He was the ultimate sports fan (especially of the Arkansas Razorbacks), and he would be elated about this scholarship,” said his brother David Brick. “Phillip never liked people making a big fuss over him, but I’m sure he would be happy with this. I’m glad we can honor him in this way and keep his memory going.”

“He loved the college and the community, and he gave everything he had. He had a way with people, and he knew what buttons to push to get things done. People knew they could call on him.”

Brick’s sons, Phillip Jr. and William, said the scholarship fits well with their father’s commitment to the community and higher education.

“Our dad cared greatly about this community, after growing up and raising our family here,” they said. “He knew that education was crucial to continue the community’s growth and movement in the right direction. That is why he invested so much of his time in MSCC and the Marion School Board. This scholarship is yet another important contribution our dad can make in building a strong education foundation in this community.”

“While the past few months have been extremely hard on our family, the outpouring of support from the community has carried us through. It serves as a constant reminder to us of the impact our dad had on others. We can never repay the kindness that has been shown to us during this difficult time, but we sincerely thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers.”

MSCC President Dr. Glen Fenter, who met Brick two decades ago during a pickup basketball game, said Phillip readily shared his talents to make Crittenden County a better place to live.

“Phillip was a devoted and valued friend of Mid-South Community College, and he will be sorely missed,” Dr. Fenter said “He took great pride in the things he believed in – his wife Leslie, his sons Phillip Jr. and William, his brother David, his work at Fidelity Bank, his work with the Marion School Board, and his work with Mid-South Community College.”

“He possessed tremendous insight, wisdom and strength of conviction. Many of our business, political, and civic leaders routinely sought Phillip’s advice on a wide range of matters, simply because they valued his opinion greatly. Phillip always made us think. Phillip was the kind of guy you wanted on your team whether it was basketball, business, education, or life.”

“Our organizations, businesses, and our lives – everything that he touched –– have huge vacuums with his passing. While our work and our lives will continue, they will never really be quite the same. But if it was Phillip’s intent to leave the world a better place than he found it, he clearly succeeded.”

Brick recently chaired the MSCC Foundation Board and served for almost 10 years as a member of the organization.

“Phillip was a great friend of mine for more than 30 years,” said Patti Coleman, MSCC Director of Advancement. “He always gave me good advice, and there’s nothing he wouldn’t do for you.”

“Any time I needed something important for the Foundation, all I had to do was pick up the phone, and he would take care of it. He loved the College and was proud of his association with it. He came to every (Foundation Board) meeting we had and every event we sponsored, unless there was a Razorback game. He was so well respected, honest, and good, and he never wavered from that.”

Brick, an avid fan of the Arkansas Razorbacks, was also the past President of Memphis-Eastern Arkansas Razorback Club and past President of the West Memphis Chamber of Commerce and Meadowbrook Country Club.

In addition, he served as a member of the Marion School Board and the West Memphis Rotary and was a Paul Harris Fellow.

Brick, Executive Vice President of Fidelity National Bank before his untimely death, attended and graduated from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (1977).

The Phillip M. Brick, Sr. Memorial Athletic Scholarship fund will support the awarding of scholarships each fall and spring semester to Mid-South Community College student-athletes actively participating in MSCC’s intercollegiate athletics program. All awards will be made in accordance with National Junior College Athletic Association Division II rules and guidelines.

Recipients will be able to apply the scholarship toward tuition, fees, and/or books.
