Mid-South Community College, in collaboration with Weaver Elementary School, has purchased much-needed winter clothing items for students in Mr. Puckett’s class.
MSCC, with the college’s chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society leading the way, collected and spent more than $800 to deliver more than just warm holiday wishes to the youngsters. PTK members encouraged and challenged Mid- South students and employees to give toward the effort and agreed to match contributions up to $250.
“Phi Theta Kappa is an academic honor society with an ‘Honors in Action’ mentality,” said organization co-advisor Laura Mason, who serves as assistant registrar for the college. “When we heard about the need for warm clothes for children in our community, we wanted do whatever we could to make it happen.”
The local PTK chapter raised $335 during a recent “Pie for Phi” event at the college, and it used most of that to match what students and employees gave. Several collection bins were placed throughout the campus, and people contributed everything from pennies (more than 400) to bigger bills.
“We’re very pleased with the response from our students and staff, and we’re excited and honored to have the opportunity to reach out and help,” Mason said. “There are going to be some warm children in our community this winter, and that’s a great reward for everyone who contributed.”
MSCC has participated in a variety of holiday benevolence efforts in recent years, including Toys for Tots, Koats for Kids, and Clothe-a-Kid. Mid-South’s Phi Theta Kappa members are involved in numerous projects to benefit the campus and the community, including book recycling and the collection of clothing and food items for those in need.
In addition, in support of the Operation Green initiative encouraging environmental awareness, the local chapter collects recyclable plastic shopping bags in partnership with Wal-Mart to benefit the environment.
