FedEx Donates $250,000 to MSCC for Aviation Maintenance Facility

FedEx Express, whose support helped Mid-South Community College establish an FAA-certified Aviation Maintenance Technology training program in 2011, continues to demonstrate its long-term commitment, this time with a $250,000 gift.

MSCC will use the funds toward construction of a program-specific facility that will dramatically increase the number of students it can train for the high-tech, high-demand profession. In recognition of the ongoing support, MSCC will name the building the FedEx Aviation Technology Center.

“FedEx Express values the important relationship we have with Mid-South Community College,” said Greg Hall, senior vice president of Technical Operations for the company’s Air Operations Division. “This contribution is another building block in the education and training of the next generation of aviation professionals.”

Since joining with MSCC four years ago to begin developing an aviation program, FedEx Express, an operating company of FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX), has also donated a retired Boeing 727 cargo jet and various tools and testing equipment to the college. The donations, part of broader aviation education support by FedEx in the Mid-South, provide students with an optimum training situation to learn the profession.

“We greatly appreciate the tremendous commitment FedEx has made to our effort to create a world-class program on the campus of Mid-South Community College,” said MSCC President Dr. Glen Fenter. “Since the beginning of our program, we have sought the guidance and support of FedEx, and they have responded with generosity beyond measure.”

“Aviation maintenance is an especially powerful training program for our region because of an anticipated shortfall of qualified mechanics in the near future. Our goal continues to be the creation of a workforce that will be second to none in the nation, and with a partner like FedEx Express, we’re well on our way to that end.”

The $2.5 million FedEx Aviation Technology Center will feature 22,000-square feet of aircraft hangar space, classrooms, laboratories, and support areas. The new facility will give MSCC the opportunity to train as many as 200 students at one time.

Emphasizing internships and on-the-job training, the MSCC program gives students the skills and experience needed to meet the growing demands of the aviation maintenance industry.

In the first quarter of 2010, Mid-South Community College received a $3.4 million U.S. Department of Labor grant, funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, to establish the aviation tech program. MSCC listed FedEx as a key supporter in the effort.

The College used the funding to develop an integrated, FAA-certified training program for airframe and powerplant technicians. The Federal Aviation Administration formally recognized MSCC as an Aviation Maintenance Technician School (AMTS certification-2MCT 601K) during a ceremony on Jan. 3, 2011.

In addition to FedEx, major contributors toward the A&P facility include the U.S. Department of Commerce/Economic Development Administration and The Assisi Foundation of Memphis, Inc.
