Commercial Appeal Lists MSCC Among Top 50 Workplaces for 2013

The Commercial Appeal of Memphis has named Mid-South Community College one of the Top 50 regional workplaces based on survey results compiled by WorkplaceDynamics.

MSCC, which earned “Great College to Work For®” recognition from The Chronicle of Higher Education four years ago, placed fifth out of 15 honorees in the Commercial Appeal’s mid-size category.

The College earned its highest marks in the category that included questions about the institution’s direction, values, and leaders. Mid-South employees ranked the College an average of 28 percent higher in those three areas than the “Colleges & Universities - 2013” benchmark scores.

“Direction” comments from employees included the following: “The administrators at MSCC are doing everything that they possibly can to make the school and place worth coming to work for;” “I am extremely impressed with the commitment to the mission of the school. The senior managers consider their work as much mission as vocation;” “MSCC meets the needs of a community that might not otherwise be able to afford school.”

MSCC President Dr. Glen Fenter said he is gratified and humbled by the employees’ overwhelmingly positive comments and answers to survey questions.

“Any time an institution can have a clear sense of its purpose and how success is measured, it creates a more rewarding environment for employees,” said Dr. Glen Fenter, MSCC President. “We work very hard to communicate and reinforce our mission and our direction, and it is clear our faculty and staff have embraced that message.”

“We are proud of the culture we have created to make our institution a great place to work and to pursue a brighter future. I have said on more than one occasion that Mid-South Community College has some of the best, most dedicated employees in the region, and I consider it a privilege to work with them.”

MSCC workers also responded with positive comments in the Execution, Connection, and My Work categories:

“We have mangers who are innovative, willing to try new things but also know when something is working and can let it continue to work;” “Here at MSCC, you feel the teamwork all around;” “New ideas are encouraged during group discussions, departmental meetings, and special meetings for certain events.”

The Commercial Appeal partnered with the Philadelphia-based employee survey firm to determine the region’s top workplaces. WorkplaceDynamics invited 781 companies to participate, and it hand-picked 96 for the final survey/competition.

Employers were categorized into size divisions because smaller employers generally to score better than midsize employers, and midsize employers tend to receive higher ratings than large employers. Employers were then ranked within their size band based exclusively on employee responses to the survey statements.

At MSCC, 181 employees responded to the online survey by answering 22 questions addressing six factors and then providing approximately 280 comments.

According to the company’s promotional materials, “we have found that the most successful companies are the ones that employees believe in.” That is certainly the case at Mid-South Community College.
